Project Description:
1,2-Diphenylethane (DPE) is created for brominated DPE which is used for flame retarent in plastics. DPE is produced using a Friedel-Crafts reaction between benzene and dichloroethane and an aluminum chloride catalyst. Albemarle Corp. currently has a toller running the process. The production and separation wants to be brought in-house. The plant designed should produce 5,000 metric tons per year of 99% purity DPE. The project designs a plant for this process that includes all sizing and costing of equipment.
