Project Description:

Our team worked alongside Hyster-Yale in order to create a mechanism that would combine the tilt and telescoping functions of their latest steering column model.  The tilt function allows the operator of a vehicle to adjust the angle of the steering wheel.  The telescoping function allows the operator of a vehicle to adjust the position of the steering column.  In order to take those functions and combine them into one, we chose to use the rotating lever as our primary lever for the user. We used a bracket to connect to the function of the tilt mechanism and connected a clamp to the telescope lever. This clamp can be tightened to lock in the bracket and both of the functions will be locked. When the clamp is loosened, both mechanisms will unlock, allowing the user to simultaneously adjust both the tilt and telescoping functions.
