This ChE 432 capstone project involves the design of a hydrogen-fired combined cycle gas turbine power plant. This was primarily accomplished through modeling via Aspen HYSYS. First, a model of a natural gas power plant was created, since it is currently a more commonly used and better understood fuel. Then the model was converted to run on hydrogen and air. This model was optimized for efficiency by studying the effect of varying operating conditions such as temperature, pressure, and fuel to air ratio. The model was then redesigned in order to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions, with the goal of emitting little to no pollutants of any kind. The efficiency, environmental impact, and energy output were then compared to commercial Hydrogen Fuel Cell technologies. A safety and hazard analysis, process flow diagram, and piping and instrumentation diagram were created to ensure proper system controls. A capital cost analysis was then conducted to determine the approximate capital investment of this project and financial feasibility.
