The Krell Institute manages three U.S. Department of Energy Ph.D. Fellowship opportunities for students planning for full-time, uninterrupted study towards advanced degrees in science related fields. Each fellowship provides up to four years of funding, including full tuition and required fees, a generous yearly stipend, an academic allowance, and a research practicum at a DOE national laboratory.
The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) provides support for students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields that use high-performance computing to solve problems in the physical sciences and engineering sector. The fellowship recently added a math and computer science track for students who undertake research in these fields that will contribute to more effective use of emerging high-performance computer systems. Founded in 1991 DOE CSGF welcomed it’s 30th incoming class in 2020 and has over 450 alumni working in the national laboratories, academia, or industry. The DOE CSGF fellowship is open to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA SSGF) supports Ph.D. students pursuing their PhD in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as properties of materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics, nuclear science, or high energy density physics. Founded in 2006 the SSGF program welcomed its 15th incoming class in 2020. The fellowship is open to U.S. citizens who are undergrad seniors or first- or second-year graduate students.
The Department of Energy Laboratory Residence Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA LRGF), launched in 2017, supports students in their second year or later pursuing a Ph.D. in fields of study that address complex science and engineering problems relevant to the stewardship of the nation’s nuclear stockpile. Fields of study include nuclear science, high energy density physics and materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics. DOE NNSA LRGF applicants must provide a Laboratory Residency Letter with their application, to show their plan for their two 12-week residencies at a DOE national laboratory. The DOE NNSA LRGF fellowship is open to U.S. citizens.
