Lab Culture
Research Areas & National User Facilities
-
Berkeley Lab has 6 scientific Areas with over 30 different divisions of research ranging from biosciences, energy sciences, earth and environment, high-performance computing, networking, and physical sciences.
-
Also, much of the lab’s breakthrough research takes advantage of the 5 national user facilities, which provide state-of-the-art resources for scientists across the nation and around the world. This is a global-user community of 14k researchers - the largest of any national lab.
-
The Advanced Light Source (ALS), one of the premiere sources of x-ray and ultraviolet light, enables scientists to view structures as small as atoms and observe chemical reactions. The ALS is undergoing a $400M upgrade.
-
The Molecular Foundry provides researchers access to state of the art instruments, materials, technical expertise, and training to advance characterization, synthesis, and development of nanoscale materials. It is home to the world’s most sophisticated electron microscope.
-
NERSC (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center) provides top-tier computing to all of the programs in the DOE Office of Science, for simulation, data analysis, and machine learning. A new pre-exascale machine, Perlmutter, begins operation in 2021.
-
ESnet - Energy Sciences Network, is one of the world’s fastest scientific networks. It reliably connects scientists around the world and their data, enabling them to collaborate on the world’s most challenging scientific problems, from materials discovery to the origins of the universe.
-
JGI - Joint Genome Institute brings integrative and collaborative gene sequencing, computational analysis, and advanced genomics for clean energy and environmental characterization and cleanup. It is the largest facility of its kind focused on the genomes of non-human living things.
