College of Engineering Unit:
The Hatfield Marine Science Center, located in southern Newport, Oregon, serves as a coastal satellite campus for Oregon State University. The expansion of its undergraduate and graduate programs has necessitated the expansion of available student housing. This need motivated the design of a 3-story, 77-unit dormitory-style housing structure. Oregon State University and the City of Newport are the primary stakeholders in this project.
The development of the student housing design considered three project goals, which informed specific design objectives. These goals aimed to create a sustainable and cost-effective design resilient to natural disasters. By following these guiding principles, the design should:
- Protect the surrounding ecosystem.
- Consider the serviceability and longevity of the structure.
- Remain accessible for all potential residents.
In addition to the overarching project goals, several disciplines collaborated to guide the design process of this building. The team included three structural engineers, one water resources expert, and one building envelope.
