Project Description:

Our team investigated the rules and regulations governing the replacement of the Cobalt-60 sources in the hospital Gamma knives. We have investigated the US and international regulatory documents regulating the decommissioning process. This project will include project management plans from the hospital, radiation protection and safety, transportation, and radioactive waste disposal plans from a third party vendor conducting the decommissioning, and government regulation and oversight from the NRC. Replacement of the Co-60 sources in Leksell Perfexion Gamma Knife equipment at the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD was selected as the object of our investigation and development of a design of the decommissioning process.

A detailed decommissioning procedure for the safe removal of cobalt-60 sources at the Avera McKenna Hospital
