Project Description:

Back pain is the leading cause of disability, ahead of 290 other conditions. Our map tracks the results of surgical procedures performed on intervertebral discs. Pathways were mapped based on surgical constraints and quantified based on a literature search. An open discectomy has an 84% success rate, failure can lead to a revision discectomy or converting to a spinal fusion. The purpose of this map is to examine the rates of success vs. the rates at which additional operations are required.
