College of Engineering Unit:
Our project is composed of two different teams for part 1 and part 2. The other OSU team has launched this project earlier than our team and worked on part 1, which is about to build the main desalination system using a method called forward osmosis (FO) method. In the FO method, a draw ammonium bicarbonate solution is used to make the pressure difference to separate the fresh water in the FO membrane chamber. They successfully operated the system and obtained the freshwater out of seawater. Our team now focuses on separating more freshwater out of diluted ammonium bicarbonate solution, which is the waste solution from part 1. This project is sponsored by Bob Cantrell, who has set up an initial design for our test bed.
