College of Engineering Unit:
The Tumalo project is located on US-20 at O.B. Riley Road/Cook Avenue. This particular intersection needs to be redesigned due to deteriorating pavement, high traffic volumes, crash history, and mobility issues. For this project, Five Peaks Engineering is responsible for fixing the deteriorated pavement, mobility issues, and safety. The team consists of three transportation engineers and two water resources engineers. Transportation engineering is responsible for designing a new intersection, roadway elevation, horizontal roadway layout, sidewalk and bike facilities, pavement thickness, and signing and striping. The transportation engineers will explore design alternatives for the intersection including roundabouts, signalized intersections, and diverging diamond interchanges. The water resources engineers are responsible for designing drainage systems. The water resources engineers design alternatives for the intersection include detention basins, culverts, artificial channels, and bioswales. The goal of Five Peaks Engineering is to design an intersection that would maintain traffic flow, reduce crash rates, and increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
