SumoBot is a robot competition that simulates a traditional Japanese wrestling sport called Sumo with the first tournament taking place in 1989. Sumo Robot tournaments consist of two robots competing head-to-head on a Dohyo (sumo ring) with the objective being to push the opponent’s robot out of the ring thus scoring a point. The first team to get two points wins the match. The purpose of this project was to create a robot to compete in the tournament held at the Oregon State University Engineering Expo in June, for our client MIME on part of Dr. Sarah Oman. Under the unified Sumo Robot Rules, our Sumo Bot participated under the Mega Sumo class, which is limited to a 3 kg weight and a footprint no bigger than a 20x20 cm. The robot is entirely remotely operated and was also required to implement one defensive or offensive mechanism other than a ramp. Our robot, the doomba, uses a high torque motor to drive a freely rotating arm that pushes opponents out of the ring while anchoring itself with an electromagnet. Featuring a 3D printed aluminum frame and gear set it's capable of easily pushing over six pounds while even being able to hold itself to a vertical wall with its' 800 Newton electromagnet.
