Project Description:

Propionic acid is primarily used in the food industry as a preservative. A chemical plant that produces 100,000 metric tons of propionic acid a year was designed using the programming software HYSYS. The industry standard of using nickel tetracarbonyl as a catalyst in this reaction was challenged in this analysis by instead using molybdenum hexacarbonyl. Safety, energy, control, and cost analyses were performed to optimize the process and assess profitability while ensuring maximal energy efficiency.
