Project Description:

This project is to design for the new dormitory housing and related amenities for Oregon State University (OSU) Hatfield Marine Science students in Newport, Oregon. The team’s common goals are to provide resident comfort, create a resilient structure, and invite community connection. This project has a variety of engineering disciplines working seamlessly together to create a design that will not only reflect the project team’s goals but exceed the client’s expectations. Two structural engineers will evaluate the structural needs of the building based on the current expected demand and potential for seismic activity. The geotechnical engineer on the project will consider the coastal landscape and soil conditions and design a foundation that provides a sturdy base from which to construct the building. Both the lighting designer and the building envelope specialist will evaluate the use of this building as a residence hall and the conditions to which the building is subjected to ensure the comfort of occupants. The water resource engineer strives to create a community feature through reclaimed and filtered runoff water from the project site. The project disciplines will work together to accomplish the team’s project goals.
