College of Engineering Unit:
PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) in the OHSU IDS care for a panel of patients whose clinical care and experience they are responsible for. There is uncertainty regarding the optimal panel size for PCPs that would result in optimal patient and financial outcomes. It is hypothesized that increasing the panel size will lead to reduction of time for a PCP to spend providing higher quality care and result in a higher number of/excess referrals to specialists. This shifting of patient care to specialists is hypothesized to increase the risk for higher costs, lower PCP satisfaction, and decreased patient satisfaction. Furthermore, this may worsen access times for specialist care.
This problem and the posed questions have lead the capstone team to create a workload calculator for PCPs to determine whether they are overburdened with work. This allows healthcare systems to more adequatly identify where help is needed most and reduce costs.
