College of Engineering Unit:
The AudioLux Audio Visualizer is an open source software and hardware platform designed to make speech and music more accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. The hardware element takes input from either the onboard microphone or the audio input jack, and converts it into visual output on a multicolor LED strip in real time.
Oftentimes, there are social events that are based around audio such as concerts, cd burning parties, presentations, musicals, and raves. However, for people who are hearing impaired, they are often excluded from such social pleasures and even if they do go, they may not enjoy or understand the audio in front of them as a result of their disability. In order to eliminate such a restriction, the AudioLux Audio Visualizer aims to aid the hearing impaired with understanding the audio they are listening to visually. Plus, those who are not hearing impaired will be treated with a dazzling light show that gives both the hearing and non-hearing impaired something to discuss about.
