PFAS Enrichment in Foams on a Northern U.S. Freshwater Lake

Project Description:
Foam can be a naturally occurring phenomenon in surface waters, and was once thought of as nature’s way of cleansing itself. In this study, 8 pairs of foam and underlying bulk water from a contaminated site were collected for PFAS analysis by LC-QToF. DOC (dissolved organic carbon) measurements were also taken. While PFAS concentrations were < 0.1% of the overall DOC, implicating DOC as the main driver of foaming, the foam was significantly enriched in PFAS, particularly long-chained species.
